11 Oct Move Over NKOTB–I’m Taking This Step-by-Step (It’s Just a Matter of Time)
A person close to me suffered a stroke last week. Thank goodness, it appears she will make a full recovery. Thinking back to that first day when there was no way of knowing the extent of the trauma, it has been amazing to witness what she has accomplished since. The paralysis on the left side was nearly 100% and she could barely speak. By Day Three, she was sitting up in a chair, and by Day Four, she took a few steps.
As I have played back this event and the following days, and it made me wonder about learning how to do something again that you learned a long time ago.
Going a step further, what if you had no memory of your previous level of a certain skill? Not a do-over, but more of a do-better. What would you do differently?
Say you had no lasting memory of being a poor dancer, i.e. Elaine from Seinfeld, and your support system said you were a fabulous dancer. Would you then train to become that talented dancer again? Without any hesitation or embedded memory, along with the right encouragement and training, you took classes with the motivation of becoming that good dancer. While you may not be the next Cheryl Burke or Val Chmerkovskiy (yes, my guilty pleasure of Dancing with the Stars comes out), you would aggressively pursue the goal of being the dancer you thought you were. How much better would your skill and technique be due to this mindset of thinking you were a good dancer, then and now?
What if we applied this thought process to our job? What if we wiped out the memory of feeling too young, too old, too inexperienced, too experienced, too flaky, too serious, too awkward, too stilted, too whatever? Would we approach a challenge or new experience differently?
What is something others have said you are great at or would be? What if you had no reason to think otherwise?
So here’s my challenge for you (and I will do the same)—think of one thing you’d like to pursue if you didn’t give in to doubts. For me, it’s finally creating a book out of the blog I wrote a few years back about living in South Tampa. Instead of the “Why do I think anyone would read or want this?”, I am approaching this as if an “Of course this is the next step.”
Sounds like the perfect song title to me.
